Spring Shows: Petaluma Museum and Beyond

Petaluma Museum and Beyond

Good things are happening in a small corner of Northern California. My work is being featured in a group show at the Petaluma Museum! This spring also brings a Warehouse District event and two consecutive weekends of Sonoma County open studios.

A friend told me recently that my paintings made her want to hop in the car, drive through Petaluma and out to the coast. That's everything, honestly. This year I want to spend less time online and more time painting the place I call home and sharing it with the people around me.

If you can make it to any of the upcoming events, I'd love to see you there. And as always, my studio/gallery is open to friends of DRFA.

Time & Tide: An Artful Exploration of Petaluma’s Wetlands

At the Petaluma Historical Library and Museum the featured exhibit, Time & Tide will bring together more than 90 artworks by local artists and students to explore the past, present, and future of the Petaluma River and its wetlands. As one of my favorite subjects of the area, I’m honored to have two pieces included in this show.

Opening reception is this Thursday, April 9
5:00 - 7:00 p.m.
20 4th Street (corner of 4th & B St), Petaluma
Event is free, but RSVP is appreciated
Exhibit will run through June 7th

Warehouse District: My Mothers Garden

This Mother’s Day, the Warehouse District which is home to DRFA, is hosting their Spring Under One Roof event and kicking off a group exhibit. My Mother’s Garden invited artists to explore the garden as both a literal and metaphorical space, inspired by our most intimate or challenging relationships that shaped who we are. Artists were encouraged to reflect on ideas of regeneration and renewal, cycles and seasons, and the tension between the manicured and the wild, the contained and the scattered. The garden may be a place of perseverance, growth, and nourishment—or one of chaos, barren soil, and spoiled fruit.

Opening Reception is Saturday, May 9

11:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. (During Under One Roof)
429 1st Street (Magic Shop Galleries at The WTRSHD), Petaluma
Event is free
Exhibit will run through July 25th

Art at the Source

Sebastopol Center for the Arts presents their spring open studios event, Art at the Source. For over 30 years this event has been connecting artists to collectors, art lovers and supporters and this will be my first time participating in the event. Art at the Source is particularly special to me as my former mentor, Camille Przewodek, had strongly encouraged me to submit my work for consideration, and I’m very glad I did. Both weekends in June, I will have my studio doors open for friends and new visitors alike to see the space, check out some of my current works and see what I have in progress. It’s my pleasure to host and I’m excited to see familiar faces during this event.

Always Learning

As part of my practice to grow and refine my skills, I was recently accepted into Arthaus Atelier in Sebastopol, which is an atelier style studio school whose principal instructors received their formal training in Florence, Italy. Arthaus is run and managed by a husband and wife team who teach traditional methods of representational drawing and painting, integrating classical realism with a contemporary aesthetic. Their aim is to make traditional techniques that were once widely taught in the European art academies more accessible. I’ve completed about three weeks so far, and it’s been a fun challenge to push myself in new directions.

Studio Warming Was a Hit! Sunday, August 10th marked the first open house of my downtown Petaluma studio. For the past eight months, I’ve been here learning, painting, planning, and preparing for upcoming shows at Paint Sausalito and Toby’s Gallery in Point Reyes Station this September. This was my first opportunity to share all that I’ve been working on. The studio warming was humbling and energizing. It gave me a chance to share my workspace, talk about my painting process, and open the...
